This free Excel template helps teams manage curriculum mapping matrix. This free curriculum mapping matrix Excel template helps course operations teams document how courses address curriculum outcomes, compare instructional depth, identify coverage gaps, and monitor mapping quality. Enter one course-to-outcome relationship per row, then use the calculated Coverage Matrix and Dashboard to review usable mappings.

The workbook includes five sheets, 200 prepared mapping-entry rows, controlled lists, formula-based status checks, and two Dashboard charts. It also contains fictional sample records for demonstration; replace or revise those samples before operational use.

In practice

What this template helps you manage

  • Create a consistent curriculum mapping matrix by recording one unique course-and-outcome relationship per row.
  • Distinguish instructional depth with four supplied mapping levels: Introduce, Develop, Reinforce, and Mastery.
  • Identify outcomes with no usable coverage and outcomes that have coverage but may lack mastery-level mappings.
  • Review course-level totals for outcomes mapped, coverage percentage, and mastery outcomes.

How to use it

How to use the workbook

Begin on Lists & Settings and replace or revise the fictional sample courses, outcomes, assessment methods, and other controlled values. Keep populated controlled lists contiguous, with no blank rows between entries, and set the Review Window in Days to a whole number from 30 through 3,650. Next, go to Mapping Entries and add one unique course-to-outcome relationship per row in the editable input cells. Enter a Mapping ID, select a Course Code and Outcome ID, choose a Mapping Level, and add relevant assessment, evidence, term, review-date, reviewer-role, and note details. Do not overwrite the calculated Course Title, Outcome Description, Level Score, Use in Analysis, or Record Status columns. Resolve any records flagged as Incomplete, Invalid list value, Review date missing, Future review date, Duplicate course/outcome, or Review overdue. Finally, use Coverage Matrix to evaluate breadth and depth across courses and outcomes, and use Dashboard to review coverage, mastery, mapping issues, and overdue reviews.

Map Courses to Curriculum Outcomes in One Excel Workbook

The Mapping Entries sheet serves as the operational source for the curriculum mapping matrix. Each row represents one course-and-outcome relationship and can capture its mapping level, assessment method, evidence requirement, evidence artifact, review term, last review date, reviewer role, and notes. Course titles and outcome descriptions are retrieved from Lists & Settings, while the level score is calculated from the selected mapping level. This structure reduces repeated typing and supports consistent course-to-outcome documentation.

Analyze Curriculum Coverage and Mastery Depth

Coverage Matrix converts usable records into a course-by-outcome view. Course codes and titles appear in rows, while configured outcomes appear in columns. Each populated intersection reports the highest usable mapping level for that pair as Introduce, Develop, Reinforce, or Mastery. The sheet also calculates outcomes mapped, coverage percentage, and mastery outcomes for each course, along with courses mapped and mastery courses for each outcome. Blank intersections indicate that no usable mapping is represented for that combination.

Check Mapping Quality Before Formal Review

The workbook evaluates each prepared mapping row and calculates both Use in Analysis and Record Status. Possible status results include Ready, Incomplete, Invalid list value, Review date missing, Future review date, Duplicate course/outcome, and Review overdue. Dashboard then summarizes usable records, mapping issues, and overdue reviews. Because Coverage Matrix uses only records marked usable, teams can correct data-quality problems before relying on curriculum coverage results.

Maintain Controlled Lists and Review Rules

Lists & Settings contains course codes, course titles, course statuses, outcome IDs, outcome descriptions, outcome statuses, mapping levels, level scores, assessment methods, Yes/No choices, the review window, and the course-status list. Course statuses can use the prepared status list, and outcome status validation provides Active, Planned, and Archived choices. The review window determines when older mapping records are flagged as overdue. Controlled values should remain contiguous because workbook validations and formulas reference fixed prepared ranges.
