In practice

What this template helps you manage

  • Standardize lesson planning: Keep essential instructional and operational details in a consistent, row-based format across courses, programs, grade bands, subject areas, instructors, and delivery modes.
  • Build lessons around measurable outcomes: Document each learning objective, success criteria, applicable standard or competency, materials, differentiation or supports, and assessment evidence.
  • Balance instructional time: Allocate whole minutes to the opening, direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, and closure. The workbook totals these phases and compares them with the scheduled duration.
  • Find incomplete plans: The calculated Readiness Check identifies plans missing one or more of the nine fields required by the workbook: Plan ID, Lesson Title, Course/Program, Lesson Date, Scheduled Duration, Learning Objective, Success Criteria, Assessment/Evidence, and Status.

How to use it

How to use the workbook

Start on Lists & Settings and confirm the As of Date, Upcoming Window, Timing Tolerance, and Review Alert Window. Next, open Lesson Plans and enter one lesson per row, assigning a unique Plan ID to each active record. Complete the lesson context, objective, success criteria, resources, instructional phases, differentiation or supports, assessment evidence, status, and relevant review dates. Enter phase durations as whole minutes; the gray calculated columns will total planned activity minutes, calculate time variance, and report timing, readiness, and review results. Resolve any issues shown by those checks, then use the Dashboard to review portfolio totals, status and delivery-mode charts, and non-archived lessons scheduled within the configured upcoming window. Yellow cells are intended for entry, while gray formula cells should not be overwritten.

Comprehensive lesson plan fields: Record Plan ID, title, course or program, grade or band, subject area, owner, date, duration, delivery mode, standard or competency, objective, success criteria, materials, instructional phases, supports, assessment evidence, follow-up, status, review dates, and notes.

Lesson Timing Template with Automatic Variance Checks

Plan time across five instructional phases: opening or warm-up, direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, and closure or reflection. The Excel formulas add the entered phase minutes and compare the result with the scheduled lesson duration. The Timing Check uses the tolerance on Lists & Settings to distinguish plans within range from those that are over or under planned, while also identifying missing duration or timing data.

Lesson Readiness and Review Tracking

The workbook separates editable lesson details from calculated operational checks. Readiness Check reports whether the nine workbook-required fields are complete. Review Alert compares Review Due Date with the configured As of Date and Review Alert Window to identify overdue, due-soon, current, or undated reviews. Archived records are excluded from review alerts.
