This free Excel template helps teams manage course section demand forecast. This free Course Section Demand Forecast Excel Template helps course operations teams estimate course demand and translate it into recommended section counts. Enter historical enrollment, expressed interest, section capacity, minimum viable enrollment, planned sections, and relevant course details in 200 prepared operational rows.

The workbook calculates demand and seat-position outputs, while its Dashboard summarizes included records for a selected forecast term and campus. Populated course rows are samples rather than institutional forecasts.

In practice

What this template helps you manage

  • Combine two demand signals: Compare growth-adjusted historical enrollment with converted expressed interest instead of relying on only one source. Forecast Demand uses the higher of the available calculated signals.
  • Turn demand into section recommendations: Convert Forecast Demand into Recommended Sections by dividing demand by Section Capacity and rounding up to a whole section.
  • Compare recommendations with the schedule plan: Enter Planned Sections to calculate Planned Seats and Seat Position. A negative seat position indicates that planned seats are below forecast demand.
  • Identify records that need attention: Calculated statuses evaluate inclusion, setup completeness, source-data availability, capacity, planning, seat position, and minimum viable enrollment. Formula-defined outcomes include Excluded, Setup Incomplete, Insufficient Data, Capacity Missing, Plan Missing, Seat Shortage, Below Minimum, and Excess Capacity.

How to use it

How to use the workbook

Start on the Assumptions sheet and review the as-of date, primary forecast term, default campus view, fallback growth rate, forecast method, interest conversion rate, historical enrollment weights, department growth rates, term list, and campus list. Next, use the Course Forecast sheet to enter one row for each course, campus, delivery mode, and forecast term. Complete the blue user-entry cells for Include, forecast term, campus, delivery mode, department, course code, course title, available historical enrollment, expressed interest, section capacity, minimum viable enrollment, any optional growth override, planned sections, and planner notes. Leave unavailable values blank and enter zero only when the actual count or plan is zero. Do not overwrite the gray calculated cells. Review Weighted Historical Demand, Interest-Based Demand, Forecast Demand, Recommended Sections, Planned Seats, Seat Position, and Status. Finally, select a forecast term and campus on the Dashboard to review totals, shortages, missing plans, data-quality alerts, department summaries, and the two included charts.

Included features and controls

Four-sheet workbook: Includes Dashboard, Course Forecast, Assumptions, and Instructions sheets.
200 prepared forecast rows: The tblForecast Excel table spans A4:Y204, providing 200 operational rows from row 5 through row 204. Initial rows contain populated examples, including BUS-210, CSC-115, and MAT-121 for Spring 2027.
Structured course inputs: Capture inclusion, forecast term, campus, delivery mode, department, course code, course title, three historical enrollment periods, expressed interest, section capacity, minimum viable enrollment, growth override, planned sections, and planner notes.
Controlled data entry: Lists validate Include, Forecast Term, Campus, Delivery Mode, and Department. Numeric validation supports historical enrollment and expressed interest from 0 to 9,999, capacity and minimum enrollment from 1 to 9,999, growth overrides from -50% to 100%, and planned sections from 0 to 99.

Forecast course demand from enrollment history and student interest

The Course Forecast sheet accepts Enrollment T-3, T-2, and T-1 values plus Expressed Interest. Weighted Historical Demand uses the available historical values and weights maintained on the Assumptions sheet. Interest-Based Demand multiplies expressed interest by the configured conversion rate. Forecast Demand then uses the higher of growth-adjusted history or converted interest, consistent with the workbook's stated forecasting method.

Calculate recommended sections and evaluate planned seats

Recommended Sections divides Forecast Demand by Section Capacity and rounds up. When Planned Sections is entered, the workbook multiplies it by Section Capacity to calculate Planned Seats, then subtracts Forecast Demand to produce Seat Position. These outputs support operational review of shortages, missing plans, below-minimum demand, and excess capacity without replacing academic, staffing, facilities, budget, or leadership decisions.

Review demand forecasts by term, campus, and department

The Dashboard filters included forecast rows by the selected forecast term and campus, with an All Campuses option available. It presents headline demand and planning metrics, summarizes eight listed departments, and includes two charts based on the department summary. This supports a consolidated review while preserving course-level detail in tblForecast.
