This free Excel template helps teams manage curriculum mapping matrix. This free curriculum mapping matrix Excel template helps course operations teams document how courses address curriculum outcomes, compare instructional depth, identify coverage gaps, and monitor mapping quality. Enter one course-to-outcome relationship per row, then use the calculated Coverage Matrix and Dashboard to review usable mappings.
The workbook includes five sheets, 200 prepared mapping-entry rows, controlled lists, formula-based status checks, and two Dashboard charts. It also contains fictional sample records for demonstration; replace or revise those samples before operational use.
In practice
What this template helps you manage
- Create a consistent curriculum mapping matrix by recording one unique course-and-outcome relationship per row.
- Distinguish instructional depth with four supplied mapping levels: Introduce, Develop, Reinforce, and Mastery.
- Identify outcomes with no usable coverage and outcomes that have coverage but may lack mastery-level mappings.

About this template
The workbook includes Dashboard, Mapping Entries, Coverage Matrix, Lists & Settings, and Instructions sheets. It provides controlled reference lists, 200 prepared mapping-entry rows, calculated quality checks, a course-to-outcome matrix, summary metrics, conditional formatting, filters, and two Dashboard charts.
It also contains fictional sample courses, outcomes, and mappings for demonstration. Those samples should be replaced or revised before the workbook is used for an actual curriculum.
The matrix places courses in rows and outcomes in columns. A populated course-and-outcome intersection displays the highest usable mapping level as I for Introduce, D for Develop, R for Reinforce, or M for Mastery.
The matrix uses only records whose calculated Use in Analysis value is Yes. It does not automatically include every row entered on Mapping Entries.
Yes. Dashboard calculates outcomes with coverage, outcomes with mastery, and outcomes with no coverage. Coverage Matrix also makes gaps visible through blank course-and-outcome intersections where no usable mapping exists.
Course summaries show outcomes mapped and coverage percentage, while outcome summaries show how many courses provide coverage and how many provide mastery.
Mapping Entries provides 200 prepared operational rows from row 5 through row 204. Lists & Settings provides 100 prepared course rows and 20 prepared outcome rows, and Coverage Matrix is linked to those ranges.
These figures describe the workbook's prepared ranges. They are not counts of currently populated courses, outcomes, or real-world mapping records.
The calculated Record Status can identify Ready, Incomplete, Invalid list value, Review date missing, Future review date, Duplicate course/outcome, and Review overdue records. The Dashboard summarizes mapping issues and overdue reviews.
A duplicate is based on more than one record using the same Course Code and Outcome ID. Records should be corrected before a formal curriculum review when their status indicates an issue.
Each mapping row can include a Last Review Date. The workbook compares that date with the current date and the Review Window in Days configured on Lists & Settings.
The review-window setting accepts a whole number from 30 through 3,650 days. The workbook can flag a missing review date, a date later than today, or a record older than the configured window.
