This free Excel template helps teams manage learning outcome coverage matrix. This free learning outcome coverage matrix Excel template helps curriculum and course operations teams map learning outcomes to learning experiences using Introduced, Reinforced, and Assessed codes. It calculates coverage totals for active records, compares outcomes with configurable targets, flags gaps and potential over-coverage, and summarizes results on a Dashboard.

The workbook includes fictional sample content for demonstration and prepared rows for operational use; it is a curriculum-planning tool, not proof of accreditation or regulatory compliance.

In practice

What this template helps you manage

  • Make outcome alignment visible: View learning outcomes as rows and learning experiences as columns, then document each direct relationship with I for Introduced, R for Reinforced, or A for Assessed.
  • Find specific coverage gaps: Calculated review statuses distinguish no coverage from results below the configured introduction, reinforcement, or assessment target.
  • Separate assessment from general exposure: Review Assessed counts independently, see how many active outcomes have an assessment, and monitor the calculated assessment coverage rate.
  • Focus reporting on the current curriculum: Active coverage calculations include only outcomes and learning experiences marked Active. Mappings associated with Draft or Retired records do not contribute to active totals.

How to use it

How to use the workbook

Start on the Dashboard by entering the program name and review date, then set the minimum introductions, reinforcements, and assessments required per outcome and the over-coverage threshold. Next, enter one measurable outcome per row on the Learning Outcomes sheet and add each course, module, workshop, project, practice activity, or assessment once on the Learning Experiences sheet. In the Coverage Matrix, enter I, R, or A wherever an experience directly introduces, reinforces, or assesses an outcome; leave the cell blank when no direct coverage is documented. Review the calculated outcome summaries and Dashboard results, revise the curriculum plan as needed, and update statuses and review dates after a formal review. After mappings exist, do not independently sort, insert, delete, or reorder the linked matrix and source rows because row order controls alignment.

Included features and controls

Five purpose-built worksheets: The workbook contains Dashboard, Coverage Matrix, Learning Outcomes, Learning Experiences, and Instructions sheets.
Configurable Dashboard settings: Enter a program name and review date, then configure minimum introduction, reinforcement, and assessment targets plus an over-coverage threshold. The four numeric settings accept whole numbers from 0 to 20.
Seven headline metrics: The Dashboard calculates Active Outcomes, Active Learning Experiences, Outcomes Meeting Targets, Outcomes Requiring Review, Outcomes with Assessment, Total Active Mappings, and Assessment Coverage Rate.
Coverage review categories: Dashboard and matrix formulas identify No coverage, Below introduction target, Below reinforcement target, and Below assessment target. Over-Covered is reported as a separate secondary alert.

Use the learning outcome coverage matrix to identify curriculum gaps

The learning outcome coverage matrix provides a single view of where active learning experiences support active outcomes. Instead of relying on separate course documents, reviewers can record direct alignment at each matrix intersection and see calculated counts for introductions, reinforcements, assessments, and total active coverage. Primary review statuses help distinguish completely uncovered outcomes from outcomes that fall below a specific target, giving curriculum teams a more focused starting point for review.

Measure assessment coverage without overstating compliance

A learning outcome can appear throughout a program without being directly assessed. This Excel template counts Assessed mappings separately, reports the number of active outcomes with at least one assessment, and calculates an assessment coverage rate. Teams can adjust the minimum assessment target to reflect their own planning approach. These results support operational review and discussion but do not establish accreditation or regulatory compliance.

Manage active, draft, and retired curriculum records

Both source registers support Active, Draft, and Retired statuses. Calculations include active outcomes and active learning experiences only, so teams can retain draft or retired records without adding their mappings to current coverage totals. Blank rows are ignored. Once matrix entries have been added, outcome rows and learning-experience rows must remain aligned and should not be independently reordered.

Review both insufficient coverage and possible over-coverage

The Dashboard highlights outcomes that require attention because they have no coverage or do not meet introduction, reinforcement, or assessment targets. A separate threshold-based alert identifies outcomes with total active coverage above the configured limit. Together, these signals support discussion about missing curriculum support, inadequate assessment, repeated practice, or unnecessary duplication without making the decision on behalf of the reviewer.
