How to use it
How to use the workbook
Start on the Dashboard and replace the sample course name, term, instructor, as-of date, grade thresholds, passing threshold, missing-work threshold, and overdue-blank setting. Next, configure the 12 fixed slots on the Assignments sheet before entering scores; each slot maps directly to one Gradebook score column, so do not reorder slots after scores have been entered. Then replace the sample roster and scores in Gradebook rows 6 through 105. Enter numeric scores from zero through each assignment’s configured maximum, use EX for excused work, and leave future or not-yet-graded work blank. Finally, review the calculated grades, missing-work counts, learner alerts, Dashboard metrics, charts, and workbook review checks.

Points-Based Excel Gradebook Calculations
The Gradebook sheet calculates each learner’s points earned and points possible across active assignment slots. It then divides those values to produce the current grade and applies the Dashboard’s A, B, C, and D minimums to return an A–F letter grade. These are calculated outputs; users enter roster details and scores rather than editing the result columns.

Assignment Setup and Score Entry
The Assignments sheet has 12 prepared slots, each mapped to a specific Gradebook score column. Configure assignment names, categories, due dates, points possible, active status, and notes before entering scores. Valid score entries are a blank, EX, or a numeric value from zero through the applicable assignment maximum. Because slot positions control the score-column mapping, the workbook instructions say not to reorder them after score entry.
Missing Work and Learner Alerts
The template evaluates overdue blanks using the Dashboard as-of date and the Treat Overdue Blanks as Zero setting. When enabled, a blank score for an active assignment with a due date on or before the as-of date contributes to points possible and the learner’s missing-work count. Future blanks and assignments without due dates are not treated as overdue. Active learners can be labeled Missing Work, Below Passing, or On Track, while withdrawn learners are labeled Inactive.

Dashboard Reporting and Review
The Dashboard summarizes enrollment, grading progress, class performance, assignment activity, configured points, alerts, and use of the 100-row roster capacity. It also presents A–F letter-grade counts, assignment-level results, two charts, and workbook review checks. The workbook ships with illustrative sample data, including a sample course, assignments, learners, and scores; replace those entries before operational use.
Common questions
About this template
The Gradebook sheet contains 100 prepared learner rows, from row 6 through row 105. The Dashboard calculates roster capacity used against those 100 rows.
The workbook provides 12 fixed assignment slots in Assignments rows 6 through 17. Each slot maps directly to one Gradebook score column from E through P.
Enter EX when work is excused. Enter a numeric zero when the learner completed or was assigned the work but earned zero points. Leave future or not-yet-graded work blank.
Future blanks do not affect the current grade. If Treat Overdue Blanks as Zero is set to Yes, a blank for an active assignment with a due date on or before the Dashboard as-of date is included in points possible and counted as missing work. Assignments without a due date are not treated as overdue.
Active learners are labeled Missing Work when their overdue blank count reaches the configured threshold. Otherwise, an active learner with a calculated grade below the passing threshold is labeled Below Passing, and remaining active learners are labeled On Track. Withdrawn learners are labeled Inactive.
Yes. The workbook contains illustrative course settings, assignments, learner records, and scores to demonstrate its structure. Replace those populated examples before using the workbook for an operational course.
